BUCKY FULLER INSPIRATION

BK14-072 TRANSPARENT DRAWING

In my reading this weekend I came upon this inspirational quote from Buckminster Fuller.  Reading Bucky is always a fuller inspiration.

“Physics has found no solids! So to keep on teaching our children the word solid immediately is to drive home a way of thinking that is going to be neither reliable nor useful. There are no surfaces, there are no solids, there are no straight lines, there are no planes.”

I always enjoy feeling his irritation at outmoded and inaccurate ways of teaching and thinking.  Bucky is one of our heroes here at Transparent Drawing.  Previous Bucky posts here and here.

I put representational drawing in this same outmoded category. Representational drawing has far less use and function than Transparent Drawing.  Why do we keep teaching our children representational drawing, which is just as unreliable.

And indeed since there are no solids and no straight lines, then it seems that our drawing should demonstrate this fundamental understanding of the world.  Transparent Drawing acknowledges this fundamental understanding of the world.
