CULTURAL BIAS

MS18-046.5 TRANSPARENT DRAWING

Analogue drawing is such a precious tool that we possess. From what I can tell, there is a lack of innovation. Yet we should be innovating. We should be developing broader and unique ways in which to look at and think about drawing. It seems that we all should be developing our own vocabulary and definitions so as to add to the discussion.

I guess this sentiment was precipitated by the previous post, in which humans do not have an innate faculty with which to understand a linear perspective drawing, or even a photograph for that matter. Everything that we put on a piece of paper has a cultural bias.

So if our ability to understand a two dimensional picture plane is cultural, then evolution of our understanding is possible. The act of drawing on a piece of paper is not innate. We can evolve our understanding.

We are continually presented with all sorts of cultural biases, definitions and understandings that have proven false. As as we rocket thru these days in the early part of the 21st century, the amount of re-definition of what we consider to be culturally acceptable is changing to a phenomenal degree.

So I believe that analogue drawing should be added to this list of cultural biases to be challenged.  I simply do not think that analogue drawing is moribund. And I firmly believe that to keep analogue drawing vital we do need to continually evolve our definitions, understandings, approaches, uses, etc. And when I say believe, I mean I really believe. Which is one reason at least why I find this project to be so much fun.
