LOOS VILLA MUELLER
I have been looking more at the residential work of Adolph Loos. This Transparent Drawing of the Mueller House, or Villa Mueller, is a result. I assembled this drawing from the multiple photographs and plans on Google Images. I don’t think that any of the books that I have include this work. In fact, I was not familiar with it until I saw it on the web. It would be a good idea, if you have not done so already, to go to Google Images just so you can see what information is out there for a specific building. Just type in Villa Mueller.
From my drawing, I feel that I have a far greater understanding of the exterior form. There is a roof terrace and we can see the beginnings of the modernist and postmodern tendencies to frame views with openings in rooftop walls. This is nothing more than a simple box. Yet the spatial and form complexity is very rich.
However, there is always room for improvement. So when I take another transparent look at this building in the future, I want to incorporate the interior volumes along with the exterior. I have found that a clearer understanding of interior volumes can be accomplished with an axonometric. Yet there is a compelling quality when you incorporate perspectival principals, as I did with the drawing above.
